About Me

I am a self taught artist inspired by nature's beauty. With the variety of materials and mediums, the ways of expressing that beauty continues to change and grow.

Influenced by the beauty of the natural wonders on the coast, I enjoy creating scenes and painting the wildlife that surrounds me. Since childhood I have loved birds and water and this is reflected in my art. A few years ago I found gourds and was intrigued with the creative possibilities and variety of techniques that could be used to turn a gourd into a work of art. Along the way my work expanded to include wood and canvas on which to express myself. With limitless possibilities of mediums, imagination, and expression, I create one-of-a-kind decorative and functional pieces of art.

Materials

  • GourdsA hard shell gourd is a fruit which belongs to the squash / melon family. A green gourd is heavy containing 75% water, but after it dries in the field it is light and durable. The finished gourds are intricately carved, wood burned, and enhanced with acrylics, stains, dyes, and organic materials. Each gourd presents a unique canvas to join nature and art. No two gourds are alike and all are unique, one-of-a-kind creations.
  • WoodsVarious woods are used in my artwork. The majority of wood is found while walking through beautiful coastal locations. These found pieces include driftwood, weathered boards, and bark. The wood is used in various ways to create bases for gourds or are painted, wood burned, and carved to create a unique wall hanging.

  • CanvasMore recently my love of nature has found expression through the use of canvas and acrylics. My love of animals is expressed through pet portraits on canvas. Realistic portraits are hand drawn and painted from a photo to capture the unique personality of a cherished pet.
